In case you’re wondering who Delani is, the name that has been popping up in places, the shadowy figure skulking in the background, the mysterious voice over the phone…THAT’S ME!
I met Laura and Dave at Reevis Mountain School of Self Reliance in 2009 when they were still living in Arizona. We worked together on a farm in the desert in the middle of summer… So of course we are still friends! We kept in contact over the years. They kept expanding their herd while I traveled a bit. Then they decided to move to North Carolina quite suddenly for Dave’s job and I knew that one day I would join them out here and see what the south had to offer. So here I am finally! And I am really enjoying it. I have loved meeting all new people and learning new skill sets. Laura teaches me something new everyday whether it is tricks to working with a spreadsheet or about the difference between spruce and pine trees.
Much of my day is spent helping the farm business through making product, checking inventory, replying to emails, writing blog entries and newsletters, and manning the farmer’s market booth. Laura manages to keep me on track long enough to actually get stuff done and provides encouragement for the points where I just can not make one more batch of deodorant. We bounce ideas off of each other (mainly Laura firing off ideas and me with a blank look in my eyes). I take care of the farm and animals while they are at conferences. That involves feeding all five of the dogs, the cat, the goats, and the chickens, milking the goats in the morning and at night, trying to not have anything break or explode, catching any goats that get through the fence and into the yard. It is never a dull moment here.
